The Field Spaniel is the oldest of the British land spaniels and the archetype of the spaniel family; from 1892 the larger dogs became Field Spaniels while the smaller became the forerunner of the Cocker Spaniel. After extreme show breeding and wartime decline left it nearly extinct by 1960, devoted fanciers revived the breed to 100 entries at Crufts in 1995. Docile, active and sensitive, it is an ideal gun dog and country family companion but unsuited to city life.
