The German Hunting Terrier (Jagdterrier) was created after World War I by experienced hunter-breeders led by Rudolf Friess, founded on four black-and-tan terriers of pure Fox Terrier lines and refined with Old English Wirehaired and Welsh Terrier crosses; the breed club was founded in 1926. Bred specifically for work underground and flushing game, it is courageous, tough, enduring and fiery. Its intense hunting drive demands an experienced, active owner.
