The Estrela Mountain Dog has lived in Portugal's Serra da Estrela since ancient times and is considered one of the oldest breeds of the Iberian Peninsula, bravely defending flocks against wolves and thieves. A mastiff-type molossoid standing 62-72cm and weighing up to 50kg, it is vigilant and dignified, deeply distrustful of strangers yet outstandingly loyal to its shepherd master. This independent guardian breed needs an experienced owner, consistent training and plenty of space.
