The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is the only retriever breed developed outside Britain, tracing by legend to Newfoundland dogs shipwrecked on America's Chesapeake Bay in 1807 and crossed with local hounds. Built for efficient, sustained retrieving on land and in water, its oily double coat sheds the harshest weather. Bright, affectionate and courageous, it needs vigorous daily exercise, ideally including swimming.
