Scleronephthya spp.
A non-photosynthetic soft coral in red, orange or white. Its branches are shorter and more compact than Dendronephthya and the polyps cluster in dense tufts. It has no zooxanthellae and needs a near constant supply of fine food.
Scleronephthya is a genus of octocoral soft corals in the family Nephtheidae, order Malacalcyonacea, found in the western Pacific from South-East Asia to Australia, with about ten species including Scleronephthya gracillimum. Colonies are vivid red, orange or white, with branches shorter and more compact than those of Dendronephthya in the same family and polyps clustered in dense tufts at the tips. The genus is non-photosynthetic, hosting no zooxanthellae, so nutrition depends entirely on suspended matter captured from the water. It attaches on current-swept reef slopes, under overhangs and on cave ceilings, and inflates the colony by taking in water. Like Dendronephthya it is difficult to keep: without an uninterrupted supply of fine food such as phytoplankton the colony gradually shrinks and is lost. As a soft coral with no stony skeleton it is not covered by the CITES coral listings.

It has no zooxanthellae, so light is not needed; in the wild it attaches in dim places such as under overhangs and on cave ceilings. Under bright lighting algae settle on it and weaken the colony.
It grows where current is strong, so give it vigorous randomised flow and a position where suspended food keeps reaching the branches. Mounting it upside down under an overhang is closest to its natural posture.
Water 24-26C, specific gravity 1.023-1.025 (salinity 33-35 ppt), pH 8.1-8.4, KH 8-12. Heavy feeding drives nutrients up, so run generous water changes and mechanical filtration.
Success depends on feeding. AlgaeBarn notes that non-photosynthetic systems need large amounts of varied food across a range of particle sizes and recommends combinations that include live phytoplankton and bacterioplankton. Feeding several times a day, or dosing automatically, is the practical approach.
It is very demanding and long-term success is rarely reported; under-fed colonies shrink over weeks to months. Having no stony skeleton, it is not covered by the CITES coral listings.
Advanced. This is an advanced-level species. It requires specialized equipment and advanced husbandry skills with precise environmental control.
The ideal temperature for Scleronephthya is 24〜26℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
Scleronephthya feeds on: Azooxanthellate and filter-feeding, needing a near constant supply of fine foods, phytoplankton above all.. Aim for a balanced diet with appropriate feeding frequency.
