About
Cycloseris is a genus of solitary fungiid corals distributed across the Indo-Pacific. Most species are free-living rather than attached, growing on lower reef slopes and on the soft sediments between reefs, where they tolerate turbid water. The disc is round or oval and some species reach about 10 cm across. The central mouth is ringed with tentacles and can be drawn out into a slit. The septa inside the corallite wall and the costae that join them at the base are both thick but finely toothed, and their form distinguishes the species. Cycloseris can be confused with Fungia, but Cycloseris is free-living even as a juvenile whereas Fungia keeps a scar where it was once attached. The genus was redefined in 2012 to take in some colonial, multi-mouthed species formerly placed in Coscinaraea. As a scleractinian it is listed on CITES Appendix II.

Okinawa Prefecture's regulations ban the collection of reef-building corals, including stony corals (Scleractinia), organ-pipe corals (Tubiporidae) and blue coral (Helioporacea); this covers corals naturally attached to quays or ropes, broken fragments lying on the seabed, and skeletons. Possessing or selling illegally collected corals is also banned. Cultured corals are exempt, and the prefecture advises buyers to confirm that a coral is cultured, on an artificial base or tagged.
