The Weimaraner was developed in 19th-century Germany at the court of Weimar, where nobles sought an all-purpose hunting dog capable of tracking large game. Believed to descend from crosses including Pointers and Bloodhounds, the breed takes its name from the Grand Duchy of Weimar. Its most distinctive feature is a sleek, short coat of silver-gray that can appear almost blue in certain light, paired with striking eyes that range from pale amber to a ghostly blue-gray — earning the breed its poetic nickname, the "Gray Ghost." In temperament, Weimaraners are warmly affectionate and form deep bonds with every member of the family, though this very loyalty can tip into separation anxiety if not carefully managed. They possess both exceptional athleticism and keen intelligence, excelling in dog sports such as agility and tracking. Given adequate exercise and mental stimulation, a Weimaraner becomes a devoted lifelong companion unlike any other.
1High Exercise Needs
Weimaraners were developed as hunting dogs and require substantial daily exercise — around two hours for adults. Beyond walks, activities like fetch in open spaces or visits to a dog park help burn their energy. Without sufficient exercise, they are prone to stress-related destructive behavior.
2Prone to Separation Anxiety
Weimaraners form intense bonds with their owners and often struggle with being left alone for extended periods. Families with long absences should patiently train alone-time tolerance from puppyhood. Severe cases can result in prolonged barking or destruction of doors and furniture.
3Needs Ample Living Space
Reaching 56–69 cm in height and 25–40 kg in weight, Weimaraners are not well-suited to small apartments. A house with a yard or proximity to spacious parks is ideal. Even indoors, provide generous space along with large-breed equipment such as an appropriately sized bed and crate.
4Intelligent — Training Is Essential
Highly intelligent, Weimaraners learn commands quickly but will act independently when bored. Consistent positive reinforcement training from puppyhood is essential, as is establishing clear leadership. First-time dog owners are encouraged to consult a professional trainer.
5Breed-Specific Health Risks
As a large, deep-chested breed, Weimaraners are susceptible to bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), so avoid vigorous activity after meals. Hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism are also reported in the breed. Regular veterinary check-ups and sourcing from a reputable breeder help reduce hereditary risks.

6Low-Maintenance Coat
With their short coat, Weimaraners require only a few brushing sessions per week rather than daily grooming. Shedding occurs but is less noticeable than in long-haired breeds. Bathing once or twice a month is generally sufficient; regular ear cleaning and nail trimming are also important.
7Understanding the Costs
Weimaraner puppies in Japan are typically priced between 200,000 and 400,000 yen, reflecting their relative rarity. As a large breed, ongoing costs for food, veterinary care, and accessories are considerable — budgeting 30,000 to 60,000 yen per month is a reasonable estimate. Pet insurance is worth considering.
