The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel traces its roots to the royal courts of 17th-century England, where King Charles II was famously devoted to his small spaniels — a fondness that gave the breed its name. Crossbreeding with flat-faced dogs during the 19th century altered the original look, but early 20th-century enthusiasts worked to restore the longer-faced type, resulting in the Cavalier we know today. The breed's most striking features are its large, round, melting eyes and long, silky ears framed with flowing fringing. The coat comes in four recognized color patterns: Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black and Tan. In temperament, Cavaliers are consistently gentle, sociable, and adaptable, forming easy friendships with children, seniors, and other animals alike.
