The origins of the Chinese Crested Dog are debated, with theories pointing to Africa or China, though historical records suggest ancient Chinese sailors kept them aboard ships to hunt vermin. The breed later made its way to Europe, where it became a fashionable companion among aristocrats in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its most striking feature is the existence of two coat varieties within the same breed: the nearly bare Hairless type, which has fur only on the head, paws, and tail, and the fully coated Powderpuff with its silky, flowing double coat. Weighing roughly 3 to 6 kilograms, the breed has an elegant, slender build. In temperament, Chinese Crested Dogs are devoted and affectionate, forming deep bonds with their families while retaining a playful, lively spirit. Their minimal shedding makes them a popular choice for allergy-conscious households, and their calm, indoor-friendly nature suits apartment living well.
1Hairless vs. Powderpuff
The Hairless variety has fur only on the head, tail, and paws, with most of the body exposed. The Powderpuff is fully coated with a soft, silky double coat that requires regular brushing. Both types can be born in the same litter, so understanding the differences before adoption is important.
2Skincare Is Essential
The exposed skin of the Hairless type is prone to sunburn, dryness, and acne-like blemishes. Apply dog-safe sunscreen before outdoor activities and moisturize after baths. Dressing them in appropriate clothing during cold or sunny weather helps protect their sensitive skin.
3Sensitive to Cold
The Hairless variety has little natural insulation and is particularly vulnerable to cold temperatures. Maintain a warm indoor environment and always dress them in a coat or sweater when going outside in cooler weather. Even the Powderpuff benefits from protection during sudden temperature drops.
4Deeply Attached to Owners
This breed forms strong bonds with their owners and can struggle with being left alone for long periods. Early training to gradually accustom them to alone time helps prevent separation anxiety. They tend to thrive in households where someone is home for much of the day.
5Watch for Dental Issues
The hairless gene in this breed is linked to incomplete tooth development, so Hairless individuals often have missing or malformed teeth. Regular brushing and veterinary dental check-ups are especially important for this type. Powderpuff dogs typically have dental health comparable to other small breeds.

6Socialization Matters
While generally friendly, Chinese Crested Dogs can be timid around strangers or large dogs without early socialization. Exposing puppies to a variety of people, sounds, environments, and other dogs helps build confidence. Due to their small, slender build, supervision is advised when they interact with much larger dogs.
7Grooming Requirements by Type
Hairless dogs need regular brushing of their crested, socked, and plumed areas, plus dedicated skincare routines. Powderpuff coats are prone to tangles and ideally brushed daily to prevent matting. Regardless of type, routine grooming appointments help keep both varieties looking and feeling their best.
