The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen (PBGV) is a small scent hound developed over several centuries in the Vendée region of France's Atlantic coast to hunt rabbits and hares. Its name translates from French as "small, low, rough-coated, from the Vendée" — an apt description of the breed's short legs and dense, wiry double coat. Large brown eyes, long pendant ears, and bushy eyebrows give the PBGV its distinctively cheerful expression. In personality, it is lively, friendly, and curious, yet carries the independent spirit typical of scent hounds. It forms deep bonds with its family and generally gets along well with children and other dogs, though a compelling scent can quickly override its attention to commands. Robust and relatively long-lived, the PBGV is well-suited as a companion for active households seeking a spirited, affectionate, and characterful dog.
1High Exercise Needs
Originally bred to hunt in rough terrain, this breed has considerable stamina and needs about an hour of exercise daily. Insufficient activity can lead to stress and unwanted behaviors, so access to open spaces or nature trails is ideal.
2Strong Scent Drive
As a scent hound, this breed has a powerful nose and may bolt after interesting smells during walks. Off-leash activity in unfenced areas carries a high escape risk, so a secure leash or enclosed yard is essential.
3Independent Streak
Despite being cheerful and affectionate, this breed's hunting heritage gives it a stubborn independent streak that makes training a patient endeavor. Consistent positive reinforcement and early socialization from puppyhood yield the best results.
4Rough Coat Grooming
The rough double coat benefits from brushing 2–3 times a week to prevent tangles and dirt buildup. Regular hand-stripping—a technique that removes dead outer coat—is recommended to maintain coat texture, so budget for periodic grooming salon visits.
5Ear Care Is Critical
The long, pendulous ears restrict airflow, making the ear canal prone to moisture buildup and otitis externa. Check ears weekly and clean with a vet-recommended ear cleaner when dirt is present to help prevent infections.
6Great with Kids and Pets

Care difficulty, lifespan, size and diet — all basics covered.
Bred to work in packs, this breed is typically sociable with other dogs and children. However, due to its energetic nature, adult supervision is recommended during play with young children to prevent accidental bumps or scratches.
7Diet and Weight Control
A balanced dry food diet forms the foundation of good nutrition for this breed. Many individuals are food-motivated and prone to overeating, so measure portions carefully and limit treats to help maintain a healthy weight of 14–18 kg.
