1Understand each breed's temperament and exercise needs

2Estimate the lifetime cost

3Make the most of the socialization period
Roughly 3–14 weeks of age is the 'socialization period,' when exposure to people, other dogs, and household sounds strongly shapes adult temperament. 4Receive an in-person explanation from a licensed seller

6Puppy-proof your home and prepare a safe space

7Confirm the time commitment and family agreement
Life with a dog typically lasts 10–15 years or more. Beyond daily walks, meals, training, and play, you must also plan for time alone and care during travel. Before adopting, discuss roles and responsibilities with the whole family and make sure everyone agrees.
