The Rottweiler's origins trace back to ancient Rome, where herding dogs accompanying Roman legions eventually settled in the southern German town of Rottweil. During the Middle Ages, they served as cattle drovers, guiding livestock to market, and later gained wide recognition as police and search-and-rescue dogs. Their distinctive appearance features a short black coat with rich tan markings, a powerful build, and a broad, confident stance. In temperament, Rottweilers are deeply loyal and affectionate with family, while remaining naturally cautious and watchful around strangers. The true reward of owning one lies in the deep bond that forms through consistent training, sufficient exercise, and genuine affection—producing a calm, steadfast companion for life.
1Space Requirements
As a large breed reaching 36–60 kg, Rottweilers need ample space to move around comfortably. Apartment living is challenging; a spacious home with daily vigorous exercise is essential. Access to a securely fenced yard is ideal.
2Leadership Is Essential
Rottweilers are highly intelligent and instinctively seek a confident, consistent leader. Without clear boundaries and firm guidance, they may attempt to take charge. Experienced owners or professional trainer support is strongly recommended.
3Early Socialization Matters
Exposing puppies to diverse people, animals, and environments is crucial to developing a well-rounded adult. Insufficient socialization can lead to excessive wariness or reactivity. Puppy classes and regular outings are highly beneficial.
4Joint Health Awareness
Rottweilers are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia common in large breeds. Avoiding excessive exercise during growth, maintaining healthy weight, and regular veterinary check-ups help prevent these issues. Choosing puppies from health-tested parents is also important.
5Higher Ongoing Costs
As a large breed, food, veterinary care, and supplies cost significantly more than for smaller dogs. Monthly food expenses alone can easily exceed 10,000 yen. Pet insurance is strongly recommended to manage unexpected medical costs.
Daily Exercise Is a Must

Care difficulty, lifespan, size and diet — all basics covered.
Rottweilers have high energy levels and require 1–2 hours of vigorous exercise daily. Insufficient activity often leads to stress and behavioral problems. Beyond walks, include time for running and active play sessions.
7Natural Guardian Instincts
Bred for centuries as working guard dogs, Rottweilers have strong territorial and protective instincts. Their reactions to strangers and visitors require careful management through proper training. Training that encourages aggression should always be avoided.
