The Sealyham Terrier was developed in the late 19th century in Sealyham, Wales, by Captain John Edwardes Tucker. Selectively bred to pursue badgers and otters underground, the breed was built for courage, stamina, and digging ability. Today it is far better known as a companion and show dog than as a working terrier. Its appearance is distinctive: a rectangular body covered in a pure white, wiry double coat, with a charming face framed by bushy eyebrows and a full beard. Among terrier breeds, the Sealyham is notably calm, forming close bonds with its family without excessive barking. Rare worldwide, it attracts devoted enthusiasts who prize both its unique look and its balanced, affectionate personality.
1Grooming Takes Commitment
The dense, wiry double coat requires brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Professional trimming or hand-stripping several times a year is recommended to maintain the correct texture. The white coat shows dirt easily, so regular bathing is also necessary.
2Terrier Instincts Remain
Despite its calm temperament, this breed was originally developed to hunt badgers and otters. It may instinctively chase small animals, so compatibility checks are important in multi-pet households. A stubborn streak means patient and consistent training is essential.
3A Rare Breed, Hard to Find
Sealyham Terriers are rare worldwide, and breeders in Japan are extremely limited. Finding a puppy may take considerable time, so it is advisable to begin your search early. Purchase prices typically range from approximately 300,000 to 600,000 yen.
4Moderate Exercise Is Sufficient
Despite its small size, this breed has typical terrier toughness and can meet its exercise needs with around 30 minutes of daily walking. Excessive exercise is not required, but off-leash play in a safe area is also enjoyed. The breed tends toward weight gain, so balancing diet and activity is important.
5Don't Neglect Ears and Eyes
The drop ears restrict airflow, making the ear canal prone to dirt and moisture buildup, so weekly cleaning is recommended. The facial hair around the eyes can obscure vision and should be trimmed regularly. Some individuals are prone to tear staining around the eyes.

6Deeply Devoted to Family
This breed forms strong bonds with its owners and family and prefers to be close to them. Extended time alone can cause stress, so interaction and mental stimulation after returning home are important for busy households. It generally gets along well with children, though interactions with very young children should be supervised.
7Check for Hereditary Conditions
Sealyham Terriers have a known risk for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and certain skin conditions. It is important to obtain health clearance documentation for the parent dogs from a reputable breeder. Regular ophthalmic check-ups are also a good preventive measure.
