The Dalmatian's origins are debated, but the breed is commonly associated with the Dalmatia region of Croatia, with similar dogs depicted in ancient Egyptian artwork. In 17th- and 18th-century Europe, they gained popularity as carriage dogs prized for their stamina and affinity with horses, later becoming iconic firehouse mascots. Their most recognizable trait is the striking spotted coat—puppies are born pure white, with their unique black or liver markings developing over the first several weeks of life. In temperament, Dalmatians are bright, playful, and somewhat stubborn, yet deeply devoted to their families. Their boundless energy demands daily vigorous exercise and mental stimulation to keep them balanced. Understanding their breed-specific uric acid metabolism and elevated risk of congenital deafness before bringing one home is the foundation of a long, healthy life together.
1High Exercise Needs
Originally bred to run alongside carriages for long distances, Dalmatians need 1–2 hours of vigorous exercise daily.
