Teddy Guinea Pig

The Teddy guinea pig is a medium-sized breed named for its dense, short, springy coat that gives the animal a stuffed-animal-like appearance and feel. Adults measure 20–30 cm and weigh 700–1,100 g. The coat is 2–4 cm in length and stands upright with a slight wave, giving it a thick, plush texture. A distinctive feature of the Teddy is the upturned nose (Roman nose) and notably stiff whiskers, which differentiate it from other short-haired breeds. Their temperament is typically calm and sociable, and they generally adapt well to handling, making them a good choice for families and first-time owners. Coat maintenance is relatively straightforward compared to long-haired breeds, though periodic facial checks are recommended. Like all guinea pigs, daily vitamin C supplementation is essential. Common health concerns include scurvy, urolithiasis, and respiratory infections. Lifespan is 4–7 years. Prices run around 5,000-15,000 yen at pet shops and 10,000-30,000 yen from breeders with documented lineage and coat quality. Teddies are less commonly available than English (smooth-coated) guinea pigs, so reserving one from a specialist breeder is the surest route. How they differ from similar breeds is a frequent question: Abyssinians form rosettes (swirls) of coarser hair, while Teddies have a uniform, dense, springy coat with no rosettes; the Rex has an even kinkier, coarser coat and is often confused with the Teddy. Tameness varies by individual, but hand-feeding vegetables while talking to them daily usually dissolves their wariness within a week or two—some even learn to squeak back when called by name.
