Aspergillosis (Fungal Respiratory Infection)

About this condition

A fungal disease of the respiratory tract and air sacs caused by Aspergillus mold. It is often detected at an advanced stage and is most common in birds with weakened immunity or those kept in unhygienic conditions.

Common symptoms

• Labored breathing and bobbing of the tail
• Voice changes or hoarseness
• Loss of appetite and rapid weight loss
• Lethargy and sitting fluffed in a hunched posture
• Open-mouth breathing

Common causes

• Inhalation of spores from Aspergillus fumigatus or related fungi
• Unhygienic husbandry conditions (moldy substrate or spoiled food)
• Weakened immune function due to poor nutrition, stress, or chronic illness
• Poor ventilation leading to elevated ambient spore concentrations

Prevention (husbandry & daily care)

Maintaining a clean living environment is the most important preventive measure. Change substrate and food regularly to prevent spoilage, moisture, and mold growth. Place the cage in a well-ventilated area and avoid keeping birds in enclosed, poorly aired spaces. Reducing daily stress and providing a nutritionally balanced diet helps maintain immune function and lowers the risk of infection.

What treatment does a vet provide?

At a bird-specialist veterinary clinic, the site and severity of infection are evaluated using a combination of X-rays, CT imaging, endoscopy, and blood tests including fungal antigen assays. After a confirmed diagnosis, supportive care and monitoring are provided based on symptom severity. Endoscopic examination of affected areas may be performed in advanced cases. Because early presentation significantly affects prognosis, birds showing signs of breathing difficulty should be seen promptly.
