Oryctolagus cuniculus
Renowned for its unique velvety plush coat. Calm, friendly temperament with a wide range of color varieties.
The Mini Rex is a small rabbit breed developed in the United States in the 1980s, derived from the Rex rabbit through selective miniaturization. Their defining characteristic is the distinctive rex fur—short (under 1 cm), dense, and plush, with guard hairs and undercoat of equal length that stand upright, creating a velvety texture unlike any other breed. Mini Rex rabbits are energetic, inquisitive, and can be spirited, sometimes resisting handling. Consistent, gentle socialization is key to developing a calm temperament. Housing should be at least 60 cm wide with daily supervised exercise outside the cage. Diet consists of unlimited timothy hay, pellets, and fresh vegetables. Despite the short coat, they shed noticeably during molting seasons. Common health concerns include malocclusion, GI stasis, and sore hocks.
