About
The Satin Angora was created by introducing the satin coat gene into Angora wool and is one of the four Angora breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (English, French, Giant and Satin). The commercial-typed Satin Angora gained ARBA recognition in 1987. Its defining trait is a translucent sheen on every hair, making colours look deeper than in other Angoras. The fine wool mats easily, so daily combing is recommended and the coat is harvested every three to four months. Basic care matches other rabbits: timothy hay as the staple, supplemented with pellets and vegetables. As a long-haired breed it is sensitive to heat, and generous hay is essential to prevent wool block from swallowed fibre. In Japan it is a rare breed obtained through specialist Angora breeders who keep it for hand-spinning fibre.
