The Cashmere Lop is a long-haired lop-eared breed developed in the United Kingdom. It began in 1980 when a breeder in Wales found long-coated kits in a Dwarf Lop litter; the British Rabbit Council recognized it as a breed distinct from the Dwarf Lop in the 1980s and it was being shown by the mid-1990s. It is not recognized by ARBA. A small rabbit of 1.9-2.4 kg, it carries a dense, silky coat about 4-5 cm long over a compact Dwarf Lop-type body with ears that hang beside the head. More than 35 colours and patterns are accepted, including self, agouti, shaded and tan patterns. The breed is described as intelligent, sociable and playful, and some learn their names. The coat mats easily in young animals, so kits need frequent combing until about five months of age; adult coats settle down and need roughly weekly brushing plus nail trimming and removal of dead hair. A smaller Miniature Cashmere Lop also exists. In Japan the breed reaches rabbit specialist shops only occasionally.
