The German Lop (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is a lop breed recognized by the British Rabbit Council, fixed in the UK from lop-eared stock developed in Germany; it is not recognized by ARBA. The BRC standard calls for a very thick, hefty and meaty body with the neck ideally not visible, shoulders as broad as the hindquarters, and short thick legs. Ears must measure a minimum of 27.96cm and a maximum of 35.5cm. It should not be confused with the Deutscher Widder of the German ZDRK standard, a large lop of 5.5-9kg under a separate standard. Like other lops it is described as calm and not easily startled. Lop ears ventilate poorly, so routine ear checks for otitis are advised. In Japan only a handful circulate through specialist shops and breeders.
