The Blanc de Hotot (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was created in Hotot-en-Auge, Normandy, by breeder Eugenie Bernhard, who from around 1902 crossed Vienna Whites and Checkered Giants with white Flemish Giants and produced the first recognized Blanc de Hotot in 1912. ARBA recognized the breed in 1979. The rabbit is entirely white except for a black eye band 1/16 to 1/8 inch (about 1.6-3.2 mm) wide that gives the look of fine spectacles. Abundant guard hairs lend the coat a sheen reminiscent of frost. The existing Dwarf Hotot was derived from this breed and the Netherland Dwarf, so the Blanc de Hotot is its full-sized counterpart. It is active and hardy. The Livestock Conservancy lists it as threatened, with a global population under 1,000, and Japanese breeders are very few.
