Oryctolagus cuniculus
An English marked breed: white with a butterfly nose marking, eye circles, cheek spots, a spine line and a chain of side spots.
The English Spot (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is a marked breed developed in 19th-century England, established there by the 1850s and reaching North America around 1910; the American club formed in 1924. The breed is defined by six markings on a white ground: a butterfly on the nose, eye circles, cheek spots, colored ears, a herringbone line along the spine and a chain of spots along each side. Seven colors are recognized: black, blue, chocolate, lilac, tortoise, gray and gold. The pattern is inherited as incomplete dominance, so even marked-to-marked matings yield only about 50% fully marked kits, with 25% solid and 25% lightly marked charlies. The temperament is lively and curious, and the breed needs plenty of exercise; does are good mothers and readily foster. In Japan it appears only occasionally in rabbit specialty shops.
