About
The English Angora is one of the four Angora breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (English, French, Giant and Satin), all tracing back to Ankara (historically Angora), Turkey. ARBA separated the English from the French Angora as a distinct breed in 1944. At 2.0-3.5 kg it is the smallest of the four, and its long wool covers the face, ears and feet so that only the eyes and nose show. The fibre measures 14-16 micrometres, comparable to cashmere, and grows about 3 cm per month. Temperament is generally gentle and calm. Coat care is the main challenge: grooming at least twice a week is needed to prevent matting and felting, and the coat is sheared several times a year. A hay-based, high-fibre diet is essential to prevent wool block, where ingested fur obstructs the gut. The dense coat makes the breed heat-sensitive, so summer room temperature must be controlled. In Japan the breed is available through Angora specialist breeders and rabbit shops.
