Rabbit breed with the longest ears, often touching the ground. Gentle, affectionate, and easy-going despite their large size.
The English Lop is considered the oldest lop-eared domestic rabbit breed, developed in England during the 19th century. Adults measure 50–60 cm and weigh 4–5.5 kg. The English Lop's most remarkable feature is its extraordinarily long ears—the longest of any rabbit breed, measuring 50–70 cm from tip to tip in adults and often reaching the floor. Their regal, low-slung appearance has earned them the nickname 'the dog of the rabbit fancy.' Temperamentally, they are exceptionally laid-back and gentle, among the calmest of all rabbit breeds. The exceptionally long ears require special management: the enclosure must have sufficient floor space to prevent the rabbit from stepping on its own ears, and the ear canals must be kept clean and free of infection. Diet consists of unlimited timothy hay, species-appropriate pellets, and fresh vegetables. Common health concerns include ear hematoma, otitis externa, dental malocclusion, and GI stasis. Lifespan is 8–12 years.
