Oryctolagus cuniculus
Small lop rabbit with fluffy long fur. Bred from Holland Lop with Angora coat. Affectionate and cuddly personality.
The American Fuzzy Lop (AFL) is a small lop-eared rabbit breed developed in the United States in the 1980s, created by introducing Angora wool genetics into the Holland Lop breed. Adults measure 25–30 cm and weigh 1.4–1.8 kg. They combine the Holland Lop's compact body and lopped ears with a long, fluffy wool coat, producing a distinctly charming appearance. Their temperament tends to be playful, curious, and affectionate, making them popular companion animals. The wool coat is the primary care challenge: it mats easily and requires brushing at least 2–3 times per week, with increased attention during shedding seasons. Ingested wool can accumulate and cause dangerous GI wool block. Diet consists of unlimited timothy hay (especially important for wool-coated breeds), appropriate pellets, and fresh vegetables. Optimal temperature is 18–25 °C; the dense coat makes them prone to heat stress. Common health concerns include wool block, dental malocclusion, and otitis externa. Lifespan is 7–10 years.
