The round-eared sengi (Karoo round-eared elephant shrew), described by Shaw in 1800, is a small member of the order Macroscelidea found in dry shrubland, grassland and desert in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Sengis are now treated as a separate order, which molecular studies place in Afrotheria alongside elephants. It has a long, mobile trunk-like snout and round ears, with long hind legs for fast running. The diet is mainly insects such as termites and ants with a little plant matter. It is mainly diurnal but shifts to night activity when threatened. Pairs are monogamous, and males guard females intensively around the breeding season. Gestation is 56 days, litters are 1-2. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern and it is not on CITES. The former Namibian subspecies M. flavicaudatus and M. micus are now treated as separate species. In Japan it is rarely handled by exotic pet specialists and current availability needs checking.
