Atelerix albiventris
The most common pet hedgehog species. Adorable when curled up, and relaxes on your hand when tamed. Nocturnal omnivore with a preference for insects.
The African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) is a small insectivorous mammal native to the savannas and grasslands of central and eastern Africa. Adults measure 15–25 cm and weigh 250–600 g. Their dorsal surface is covered by 5,000–6,000 modified hairs called quills made of keratin, which provide defense when the animal rolls into a tight ball. Naturally solitary and nocturnal, hedgehogs require patient, consistent handling from an early age to become comfortable with human contact. Temperature regulation is critical: they must be kept at 24–29 °C, as temperatures below 22 °C can induce a dangerous torpor state. Diet should consist of quality insectivore kibble supplemented with live insects such as mealworms. Common health concerns include dermatological issues (mites, ringworm), neoplasia, and Wobby Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS), a progressive neurological disease. Lifespan is 3–6 years.
