Close relative of the Djungarian with many color varieties. Can be feisty but tames down with patience.
Campbell's dwarf hamster (Phodopus campbelli) is native to the steppes and semi-desert regions of southern Russia, Central Asia, and Mongolia. Adults measure 7–12 cm and weigh 30–50 g. Very similar in appearance to the Djungarian hamster, it can be distinguished by its slightly more rounded ears and a less pronounced dorsal stripe. Selective breeding has produced a wide range of color varieties including albino, pied, and platinum forms. Campbell's hamsters can be more prone to biting than other dwarf species, requiring patient, gradual socialization. Housing should be at least 40 cm wide with a 15 cm wheel and optional sand bath. Optimal temperature is 18–26 °C. They have a genetic predisposition to diabetes mellitus, making sugary foods and treats strictly inadvisable. Common health issues include diabetes, tumors, and dermatitis. Lifespan is 1.5–2.5 years.
