Rare hairless guinea pig that loses all fur within weeks of birth. Different genetics from Skinny pigs. Temperature management is critical.
The Baldwin guinea pig is a completely hairless guinea pig breed resulting from a spontaneous genetic mutation discovered in the United States in the 1970s–80s. Adults measure 20–30 cm and weigh 700–1,200 g. Unlike the Skinny pig (which retains patches of hair on the muzzle and feet), the Baldwin is born with a normal coat but undergoes progressive hair loss over the first 2–3 weeks of life, resulting in complete baldness by adulthood. The skin ranges in color from pink to black to mottled combinations, and fine wrinkles are visible. Their striking appearance makes them an interesting choice for owners seeking something unusual. Temperature regulation is critical: without insulating fur, the ambient temperature must be maintained strictly at 22–26 °C. The exposed skin tends to dry out and requires gentle moisturization with pet-safe products. Diet must include unlimited timothy hay and daily vitamin C. Common health concerns include dermatological conditions, scurvy, and hypothermia. Lifespan is 3–5 years.
