Gottingen Minipig

The Gottingen minipig is a laboratory miniature pig line created in the late 1960s at the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics of the University of Gottingen, Germany, by crossing the Minnesota Miniature, the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig and the German Landrace. The Landrace cross fixed the white-to-pink skin that characterises the modern line. They are known for a docile nature and a clean, well-characterised health status. In 1992 the Danish company Ellegaard established barrier-bred, microbiologically defined Gottingen minipigs, and the line is now bred at four locations worldwide. In the United States, from the 2010s, animals were purchased and bred privately for sale as pets, and the small size made it a popular pet pig line. In Japan pet-quality animals are few and it is treated as a smaller line than the pot-bellied type. Pigs are livestock under the Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases Control Act: even as pets, owners must follow the rearing hygiene management standards and file the annual report with the livestock hygiene service centre by 15 April.
