About
The bushy-tailed jird is the only species of the monotypic gerbilline genus Sekeetamys, described by Oldfield Thomas in 1892. It occurs in Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, in arid and semi-arid areas with under 100 mm of annual rainfall, preferring rocky terrain, and its range appears to be expanding northward in Israel. It is a large mouse-like rodent that carries its long, well-furred tufted tail upright, with large ears, pale eye patches, slender legs and long hind feet with hairless soles. A captive individual lived 7.3 years, a long life for a small rodent. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern with a stable population and no particular threats. In captivity provide a three-dimensional rock-style layout with deep substrate and keep the environment dry; the tail tuft is easily damaged, so never grab it. In Japan it appears only rarely at exotic pet shops and husbandry information is scarce.
