Phodopus sungorus 'Sapphire'
A Djungarian colour in which the whole coat, stripe included, turns a soft bluish grey. It is recessive, so it shows only when both parents pass on the gene, and it tends to whiten in winter.
Sapphire (blue sapphire) is a Djungarian or winter white dwarf hamster (Phodopus sungorus) colour. Compared with normal, the whole coat including the dorsal stripe is paler and bluish grey; even lighter, creamy animals are sold as cream sapphire. English-language sources list it with normal and pearl as a true winter white colour. The gene is recessive, so only pups that receive one sapphire gene from each parent are sapphire. Sapphire × sapphire gives all sapphire; sapphire × a normal without the gene gives all normal-looking pups; and two normal-looking carriers produce sapphire pups about a quarter of the time. The sapphire gene tends to lighten the coat, so many animals whiten partly, sometimes almost completely, in winter and return to colour in spring. Combined with pearl it gives a near-white snow white. In Japan it is a standard colour alongside normal, pearl white and pudding and is widely sold.

Soft bluish grey all over, stripe included. Normal has a grey-brown back with a sharp black stripe, and pudding is beige.
Recessive: sapphire × sapphire gives all sapphire, and two normal-looking carriers give about one sapphire in four.
Sapphires often whiten partly or almost fully in winter and regain colour in spring. This is not a disease.
Care is the same as for a normal-coloured Djungarian: bedding at least 10cm deep, a nest box, a solid-surface wheel and a sand bath.
Aim for 18–26°C and 40–60% humidity. Below 10°C or above 30°C is life-threatening, so the room needs air conditioning most of the year.
Red eyes, an all-black coat or white patches suggest a Campbell's hamster or a hybrid, and hybrids often have health problems.
