It has a distinctive upturned snout used for digging in sand, which is the origin of its 'hognose' name. Adults reach about 40–60 cm in total length, a manageable size, and many color morphs have been bred in recent years, increasing its popularity. It is rear-fanged with mild venom, but it is docile and considered to pose little danger to people. As a defense it shows unique behaviors such as flattening its neck to bluff or feigning death (thanatosis). Keeping it requires a dry substrate deep enough for burrowing and a basking spot. It is fed thawed frozen mice, though some individuals can be finicky feeders.
