About
The Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca), or spur-thighed tortoise, ranges across the dry grasslands and scrub of southern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Its name refers not to its origin but to the shell pattern resembling traditional Greek mosaics. It has a domed tan carapace marked with black blotches and a distinctive conical spur on each thigh. Reaching 15-25 cm (occasionally over 35 cm), it is hardy and adaptable to swings in temperature and humidity, making it, alongside the Russian tortoise, a classic beginner tortoise. Provide at least 90x45 cm of space, a 35°C basking spot, a 20-25°C cool side, UVB lighting, and winter heating. Feed high-fiber, low-protein greens and hay, limit fruit, and keep it on the dry side, as excess humidity invites respiratory illness. Well cared for, it can live 30+ years.
