Prosopocoilus pseudodissimilis
One of Japan's four saw stag species, found only on Ishigakijima and Iriomotejima. The mandibles curve only weakly, even in large males, and most beetles are medium or small males of around 50 mm.
The Yaeyama saw stag (Prosopocoilus pseudodissimilis) lives on Ishigakijima and Iriomotejima and is one of Japan's four saw stag species, described in 1976. Males run 22.4-63.5 mm and females 19.9-33.5 mm. It is smaller than the mainland Japanese saw stag; beetles in the 63 mm class are uncommon and most males are medium or small at around 50 mm. The mandibles curve only weakly, drawing a gentle arc even in large males much as in the Okinawa saw stag, though the small inner teeth are somewhat more numerous towards the front. It is a separate species from the subspecies of the Amami saw stag that range across the south-western islands, and is told apart by a clypeus that is not forked. Adults fly from May to September, gather at sap of Clerodendrum and Mallotus, are active by day and night and come to lights. Larvae are found in and around rotten wood on the forest floor.

Sap of Clerodendrum and Mallotus; beetle jelly
This is a subtropical species from Ishigakijima and Iriomotejima, kept much like the mainland Japanese saw stag. Avoid extreme cold in winter and keep the substrate moist enough to clump when squeezed. Larval substrate does best kept on the damp side.
She lays in substrate, so use a set packed firm with black soil or fully fermented fine substrate. In the wild the larvae are found in and around rotten wood on the forest floor, and in culture slightly damp fermented substrate suits them best. Fungus bottles work but offer little advantage.
Keep singly. Males of this genus are aggressive and can kill the female during pairing, so house them together only a few days and separate them once mating is seen.
It lives only about two to three months from the start of feeding. Adults fly from May to September and gather at sap of Clerodendrum and Mallotus. They are active by day and night and come to lights, though they are often found sitting still on Clerodendrum leaves rather than at sap.
It is rated middling in difficulty and is not an especially hard species. It is endemic to Ishigakijima and Iriomotejima, so never release captive beetles or cross stock from different localities, and do not house it with the Amami saw stag group.
Intermediate. This is an intermediate-level species. Some prior experience and knowledge of environmental management are recommended.
Yaeyama Saw Stag Beetle typically reaches Males 22.4-63.5 mm (wild record 63.5 mm; the captive record is 63.3 mm) / females 19.9-33.5 mm as an adult. Size may vary depending on care conditions and individual genetics.
Yaeyama Saw Stag Beetle feeds on: Sap of Clerodendrum and Mallotus; beetle jelly. Aim for a balanced diet with appropriate feeding frequency.
The price of Yaeyama Saw Stag Beetle varies significantly depending on bloodline, size, captive-bred generation, and sex. Check our market price page for the latest pricing information.
