The Mishima-Io saw stag beetle (Prosopocoilus inclinatus mishimaiouensis) is restricted to Iwojima in Mishima village, Kagoshima, and was described by Shimizu and Murayama in 1998. Males measure 27.5-69.3mm and females 24.5-35mm; the wild maximum is a 69.3mm male collected in July 1999. Compared with the nominate subspecies the mandibles are thicker and less curved, and while the nominate form becomes large-toothed at about 50mm this subspecies only develops a strong mandible curve past about 60mm. The body is reddish brown to blackish brown, the blackish form being rare, with a fairly strong gloss and slender tarsi. Larvae are found in the roots of rotten hardwood and in buried fallen logs, especially camellia, and are commonest near settlements with camellia groves. Adults fly from July to November and come to the sap of tabunoki and Japanese mallotus, to lights and to fruit traps, but numbers on the island are low and sap-bearing trees scarce, so they are hard to observe in the wild.
