Deroplatys truncata is a dead leaf mantis from the Malay Peninsula and Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is brown to deep blackish brown with large dark brown to black markings on the hindwings, and its reflectance from visible to near-infrared light has been shown to resemble leaf litter, confirming its camouflage among fallen leaves. Not the largest of the genus, it has the most developed pronotal shield, which sits like a hood and earns it the name cobra-head mantis. First instar nymphs are large at about 12mm and take Drosophila hydei fruit flies from the start, moving on to small crickets and roaches as they grow. Use a well-ventilated enclosure of about 30cm with plenty of climbing branches. Adults can mate 8-14 days after the final moult, and the female lays an ootheca 7-20 days after mating. Females often attack the male, so watch pairs closely.
