The name likens the slender body with its trailing tail to a willow, and the fish is notable for holding two opposed traits at once: the swimming ability of a wakin type and the telescope eye. Judging standards have yet to settle, and most such fish are culled during selection, so few reach the market. In Yamagata Prefecture, breeding of the shonai goldfish for side viewing in tanks has produced a telescope-eyed form called shonai yanagi, which suggests that putting telescope eyes on a wakin body has been attempted in several places. Because the eyes project, faster tank mates risk injuring them.
