The black butterfly tail is the all-black line of the Chinese butterfly tail goldfish. The butterfly tail is a relatively recent Chinese import that reached Japan in the late 1970s; how it was developed is not known. The name comes from the tail, which suggests a butterfly's wings when the fish is viewed from above: the clefts of a four-lobed tail become shallow while the lobes spread widely to each side. Most individuals also have protruding telescope eyes. Like the blue-scale and brown oranda types, the butterfly tail loses colour readily, and black fades fastest of all. Holding the black requires steady feeding of colour-enhancing food, and even then many fish pale within a few years. This is not a breed kept for its swimming, but one enjoyed from above for the spread of its tail.
