The black celestial eye is the all-black line of the Chinese celestial eye. The breed was fixed from a mutation of the red telescope: the eyeballs turn fully upward and protrude, the dorsal fin is absent, the tail has four lobes and the body is comparatively long. Adults reach about 20cm. It is recorded as far back as the Qing dynasty, when it was kept alongside the bubble eye by the court elite and not allowed out of the country. The fish is entirely blind and locates food by smell, so sinking foods and unhurried feeding are necessary. Brown, blue and calico forms also exist, understood to have arisen as mutations from the black and calico telescopes. Imports into Japan are not numerous.
