The black ryukin is a ryukin line fixed on black colouring. The ryukin was fixed in China from long-tailed fish that appeared as mutations of the wakin, and reached Satsuma by way of Ryukyu in the Edo period. It has a short, deep, rounded body with long extended fins and a standard three- or four-lobed tail. Goldfish hatch the same dark colour as the wild crucian carp and then change towards red, a fading process inherent to the species. Even in breeds that hold black, such as the black telescope, fading can begin after several years and turn the fish gold, so a black ryukin should be expected to lose its colour eventually. Colour-enhancing food fed consistently helps hold it. Overfeeding and the swim bladder trouble it brings also need watching.
