Daruma ryukin is the name given to ryukin whose body is exceptionally deep and short. The ryukin was fixed in China from long-tailed fish that appeared as mutations of the wakin, and reached Satsuma by way of Ryukyu between the Anei and Tenmei eras of the Edo period. Its proper form is a short, deep, rounded body with long extended fins, but as breeding continued in China a short-tailed type appeared whose caudal does not lengthen, and that fish is handled as the short-tail ryukin. Daruma ryukin refers to the compressed body itself, and most such fish are short-tailed. The combination of a round body and small fins is not efficient for swimming, though the fish moves about a tank without difficulty. Overfeeding and the swim bladder trouble it causes need watching.
