Sakura ryukin is the ryukin line whose red-and-white variegation falls over transparent scales. Besides plain red, variegated and white, sakura is one of the recognised ryukin colours; fish mixing red, blue, purple and black are handled separately as calico ryukin. Transparent scales do not reflect light, so the red of the skin beneath shows through and the fish reads softer and hazier than a normal-scaled variegated fish. The build is that of any ryukin: a short, deep, rounded body with long extended fins and a standard three- or four-lobed tail. The ryukin is the best known of the round-bodied goldfish, widely available and not difficult to keep, though overfeeding causes swim bladder trouble in many fish, so portions need watching.
