The fukudaruma is a line selected out of the tamasaba of the Chuetsu region of Niigata Prefecture and shaped into a body as round as two bowls set together. It began with the breeder Mr Miyajima setting out to make a fish of that shape. Properly it is normal-scaled and long-tailed, though transparent-scaled and short-tailed fish are common in circulation now. Japanese Wikipedia describes it as closer to a brand than a distinct variety, with no decisive difference from the tamasaba, occupying a position comparable to the Uno line among ranchu. The underlying tamasaba arose in Niigata, known for its koi, where the ryukin is difficult to overwinter: crossing the ryukin with the shonai goldfish gave it cold tolerance. Despite the round body it swims as briskly as a wakin, and it is hardy in cold.
