Carassius auratus
A Japanese variety from crossing the shubunkin with the Edo jikin. It resembles the shubunkin but carries a four-lobed tail, and its fins grow longer and larger as the fish matures.
The aurora is a Japanese variety produced by Kawahara Yadoru from crossing the shubunkin with the Edo jikin. Born in the Heisei era, it was at first called Heisei No. 1, and took its present name after a magazine writer remarked that it shone like an aurora. It resembles the shubunkin, but differs from the Edo jikin in the length of its fins: the tail has four lobes, and the fins grow longer and larger as the fish matures. Unlike the jikin it requires no artificial colouring and so is rarely injured in handling, and it can be kept in the same way as wakin-line goldfish. Circulation is very limited and the fish is uncommon. Comparable goldfish include the Bristol shubunkin of England and the suehiro nishiki in Japan.

Goldfish varieties arose from fixed mutations and selective breeding, and body form, tail form, scale type, colour and head growth are all carried forward by selection over generations. Inheritance is therefore shown as line-bred throughout rather than split into dominant and recessive.

Enough light to view the fish from the side or above is all that is needed to show the spread of its long fins. No special lighting is required.
It can be kept in the manner of wakin-line goldfish. Because the fins grow long, keep the flow modest, avoid sharp ornaments, and provide room to swim.
Combine it with wakin types of similar pace such as the shubunkin or the comet. Mixed with ryukin or telescope types, those fish will lose out at feeding time.
Unlike the jikin it needs no artificial colour work, so no procedure that injures the fish is involved. Circulation is small and opportunities to obtain one are limited.
Beginner. This is a beginner-friendly species. No special equipment or experience is required, and it can be kept successfully with basic care setup.
The ideal temperature for Aurora Goldfish is 15〜28℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
The average lifespan of Aurora Goldfish is 10-15 years. With proper care and nutrition, they can live a long and healthy life.
