The black comet is a long-bodied wakin-type goldfish finished in solid jet black. Its base, the comet, is held to have arisen when Japanese goldfish taken to America crossed with wild carp; it has a firm streaming tail and swims quickly, and was brought back to Japan in the early Showa era. For the black comet, breeders and sellers state that the fish descends from a comet crossed with a dark carp, and individuals with barbels are known. If that account is correct the fish is strictly an interspecific hybrid, but the cross has not been confirmed in the scientific literature. Husbandry follows the wakin type: the fish grows large, so a roomy tank or a pond suits it, and colour-enhancing food is used to hold the black.
