The calico butterfly tail is the colour line that carries calico patterning on the butterfly tail. Calico denotes a complex mottling of red, black and white, a pattern that entered many breeds through crosses with the calico telescope and its mosaic transparent scales. Because the amount of pale blue depends on how those scales fall, no two fish are marked alike. The build is that of an ordinary butterfly tail: shallow clefts and broadly opened lobes, with protruding telescope eyes on most individuals. Colour fades readily, and the loss of black changes the look of the pattern considerably. Strong aeration disrupts the skirt-like sweep of its swimming and saps its stamina, so a still environment is the norm.
