Heterometrus longimanus is a scorpionid of Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore that inhabits humid tropical rainforest. It reaches 10-12 cm in total length and is uniformly black, and it is viviparous. The genus contains large species of 10-20 cm characterised by heavily built, globose pedipalp pincers set against a proportionally slender metasoma. Venom in the family is weak: a sting produces local pain, inflammation, swelling and redness lasting from hours to a few days, and no human fatalities are known. Its size, low toxicity and relatively docile disposition make it a popular pet scorpion, and unlike most scorpions species of this genus can be kept in pairs or small groups. It is nocturnal, spending the day in burrows or under logs and leaf litter.
