The Xoloitzcuintle is an ancient primitive breed of Mexico, named for the god Xolotl whose envoy it was believed to be, guiding the souls of the dead to their final destination — a role that once brought it close to extinction. Protected by the Mexican Kennel Club, which has used it in its logo since 1940, it comes in hairless and coated varieties and three sizes. Slender and elegant, it is quiet, calm, cheerful and intelligent, wary of strangers yet never aggressive.
