About
The Plott Hound is a scenthound developed in the mountains of western North Carolina. According to the UKC standard, Jonathan Plott left Germany for America in 1750 with a few boar hounds; as there were no wild boar in the country at the time, the family used them to hunt bear. Unlike most UKC-registered coonhounds, the Plott does not descend from the foxhound. It was recognised by the UKC in 1946 and the AKC in 2006; the FCI and JKC do not recognise it. The coat is short, smooth and glossy, in any shade of brindle, brindle with a black saddle, black with brindle trim, or solid buckskin or black. It is courageous on game, has a strong treeing instinct and takes readily to water. Its voice carries well and it may bay indoors. The AKC recommends hip dysplasia screening of the parents and regular checks of the pendant ears for infection. Its prey drive is very strong, so it should always be walked on a lead. Very few are bred in Japan and it is almost never seen as a family pet.
